Copper spoons

by bill piatek

The last few years I've had great luck with copper spoons in the lakes around here. Only problem is the 1/12oz Phoebe is the lightest I can find.
When I'm using straight UL rather than XUL gear spoons like Thomas Cyclones fit the bill. Anybody know of any JDM stuff?

For the Tenkara rods I can make my own from willow leaf blades but XUL is a puzzle.

XUL spoons
by: James

For ultra and extra ultralight fishing with spoons I use the 1/16 dare devil spoons, for extra ultralight if you want to go smaller I recommend the fly rod spoons.

thanks guys
by: Bill P

James,
I'll have to try the fly rod Dare Devils.

Chris,
I'll have to try them when you get them in. Thanks for being so responsive to suggestions!

2 different spoons
by: James

The fly rod spoons are the .4 gram Vega spoons. They come with a single hook whereas the dare devils have a double hook. The dare devils are however available in US sporting goods stores like Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. Tight lines!

Smallest Dardevle
by: Chris

The smallest Dardevle spoons are 1/16 oz (1.77g) and are heavier than you would want to cast with a fly rod or tenkara rod.

micro copper
by: bill piatek

James,
I see the dare devil is made in 1/32 as well. That's what I thought you were referring to. But still too heavy for my Seriyu rods, :-)

Chris,
I want to try all three weights you are getting in but the two lighter ones are especially interesting. I end up changing to a single hook from you on all the ones I use. Your comments about barbed vs. micro-barbed were or so true.

2g copper spoons and 1/32 oz Dardevles
by: Chris Stewart

Bill,

The copper spoons I ordered come in a 2.0g weight as well. I'll probably add them in a subsequent order.

You are correct. I hadn't noticed the 1/32 oz Dardevle "trout weight" spoons.

Dare devil spoons
by: James

I don’t use the 1/16 ounce dare devils for anything other than light to ultralight fishing with conventional gear. I did not know they were made in a 1/32 ounce size. Thank you for bringing this to my attention as I will hopefully purchase a few soon. Small metal is my favorite lure style for multi species angling.

Oops
by: bill piatek

Chris,
What I meant to say is I agree with your comments in the trip report about barb-less vs. micro-barbed. They still provide easy releases with better hookups.
